Title:  Synonyms and Antonyms Book

Subject:  Spelling

Grade Level:  This is now a 2nd grade standard; but I used this lesson in 5th grade when it was a 5th grade standard.  I have also used it for helping support my lessons for teaching prefixes and suffixes.

Common Core Standard: 

ELD Standard:  Recognize simple affixes (e.g., educate, education), prefixes (e.g., dislike, preheat), synonyms (e.g., big, large), and antonyms (e.g., hot, cold).

Grade 2:

1.7 Understand and explain common antonyms and synonyms. 1.8 Use knowledge of individual words in unknown compound words to predict their meaning.

Overview:  Students will be able to explain common antonyms and synonyms.

Objectives:  1. Students will create a book with antonyms and synonyms.

2.  Students will understand how to use the different antonyms and synonyms in sentences.

3.  Students will be able to use a thesaurus to find synonyms and antonyms.

Materials:

Crayons

Student notebook

Thesaurus

Activities and Procedure:

1.     Review synonyms and antonyms with the class.  Clarify that synonyms are words that mean the same thing and antonyms are words that mean the opposite.

2.    Hand out each child the lesson rubric and go over it together.

3.    Hand out each child their book.

4.    Review how to use a thesaurus. 

5.    Work on the books in class with teacher guidance.

Assessment:  The assessment for this lesson is the completed book.
